POSCO DX and POSCO A&C Collaborate on Modular House Production with Robots

2023.11.23

- Formed robot automation joint business agreement with POSCO A&C, a leading modular construction company.
- Improved productivity expected by expanding  the modular manufacturing process with automated equipment.

POSCO DX (CEO Jung Duk-kyoon) and POSCO A&C (CEO Chung Hoon) are jointly promoting process automation using industrial robots to respond to the increasing demand for modular houses worldwide.

The two companies will jointly launch a pilot project by implementing a robot automation system to the steel frame structure manufacturing unit process, which has been highly reliant on manual labor during the modular house manufacturing process. POSCO DX is in charge of the design and engineering of the robot automation system for modular steel frame assembly and welding, while POSCO A&C is tasked with optimizing the modular manufacturing process and validating the process.

To this end, they plan to jointly build a “robot test cell” at POSCO A&C's Gunsan Plant and pursue technology pre-validation (*PoC) to validate the reliability of modular house robot automation. If the effectiveness is proven under this phase, POSCO A&C plans to apply the industrial robot in earnest to the newly built Seosan plant.

*PoC (proof of concept): A validation process proving how a product, technology, information system, etc. solves an organization's problems at hand.

POSCO A&C has been rolling out automated machinery in its modular factories to respond to the increasing demand for modular houses, while pursuing and delivering a one-stop total service for the entire process of modular construction, from planning to design, production, construction, and after-sales service. Currently, it is implementing welding automation for large block structures in the first stage and next year, plans to adopt mid-assembly automation and set up an automated production system for all processes by 2025.

Having designated the robot automation business as a future growth business, POSCO DX is engaged in the robot automation engineering business including consulting, design, system construction and operation to deploy and use robots at high-risk/high-intensity industrial sites. The purpose is to discover and consult on which robot is the optimal solution for the site, and support integrated operations by linking with existing systems. POSCO DX provides robot automation services optimized for the field based on partnerships with robot manufacturers and application software specialists, as well as cooperative networks with academia such as KAIST and POSTECH and the Korea Association of Robot Industry.
