POSCO DX (CEO Jung Duk-kyoon) has jointly developed autonomous driving and collision prevention systems equipped with lidar sensors to autonomous vehicles at industrial sites, kickstarting their field-based application in full scale.

On the 11th, POSCO DX signed a memorandum of understanding with Aiyoubot (CEO Lee Gye-dong), a company specializing in lidar, at the Pangyo building to undertake joint projects on autonomous driving and collision prevention systems using lidar technology.

Through this collaboration, the two companies will attach lidar sensors to autonomous mobile vehicles such as AGV (automated guided vehicles), AMR (autonomous mobile robots), cranes, and raw material transport vehicles operated at industrial sites to bring about autonomous driving, with plans to develop a system that prevents safety accidents such as collisions in advance and disseminate it in field use.

LiDAR is a sensor that shoots a laser to the surrounding area and measures the time difference between hitting an object and rebounding to recognize solid shapes and space, while enabling a moving object determine the location of obstacles on its own. The principle is to enable safe autonomous driving by recognizing people or obstacles close to the front and rear of a mobile vehicle with a lidar sensor and slowing or stopping it contingent on the proximity level to prevent collisions.

POSCO DX, which has been actively bringing about the autonomous operation of mobile vehicles operating at industrial sites, has taken charge of the overall development of the system, including autonomous driving application and collision prevention, and Aiyoubot is in charge of supplying proprietary lidar sensors. The company’s sensor has a simpler structural design compared to existing products, making it smaller and lighter, and offers the advantage of being resistant to external environmental factors with a long duration of operational use.

POSCO DX cooperates with POSCO to supply autonomous driving and collision prevention systems equipped with lidar to AGV, AMR, unmanned cranes, raw material transport vehicles, and railways operated at steel mills and secondary battery production plants, and plans to expand to various industrial sites such as external production sites, plants, and construction sites.

A POSCO DX official said, “Both companies have been working together to bring about smart factories at manufacturing sites, capitalizing on the convergence of IT + OT technologies, and in the future, we will stay committed to pursuing the evolution and development of intelligent factories by employing technologies such as industrial AI, digital twin, and robots.”
