2014.08.08- Storing power surplus in nighttime to deal with peak electricity demand - Saves 4 hundred million KRW annually
POSCO ICT (CEO: Choi, Doo Whan) has successfully completed the project of constructing the large capacity energy storage system (ESS) for LG Chem’s factory 1 in Ochang.
The project includes provision of batteries with capacity of 6.7MWh, power conditioning system capable of handling 1.5MWh and various electrical facilities.
ESS is an energy efficiency facility that stores surplus power generated during nighttime in a mid-large sized battery, then supplies the power during peak hours when demand shoots up. LG Chem expects energy related cost to be cut up to 4 hundred million KRW with the newly constructed large capacity ESS.
ESS has been on the fast spread thanks to such a benefit for industrial sites and large buildings in Korea since last year.
The MicroGrid (independent power network) projects are well under way that links ESS with newly recyclable energy.
Newly recyclable energy sources such as sunlight and wind can lose reliability depending on the climate condition, thus output optimization technology is required that stores energy in an ESS-enabled storage then supplies the power with stability.
POSCO ICT is currently working on applying its own ESS engineering technology to the solar light power generation complex of POSCO Energy in Sinan.
Generally it takes several months to come up with a new ESS for a target site and fully stabilize it. In order to secure competitiveness in the ESS market, Posco ICT conducted functionality test in advance at its recently opened ESS test lab for linked operation with the power network of KEPCO, which enabled improved stability while reducing time for the project.
POSCO ICT boasts of the richest history in this field, including the smart grid verification facility built in December 2009 in Jeju island that showed off its ESS on site. It allowed the company to develop a new technology to cut energy cost or to link the facility with newly recyclable energy sources at industrial sites.
