- Guarantees both security and reliability with a globally highest-level certificate, the first as a Korean enterprise
- Formed a consortium with Samsung SDS, as a pioneer of global unmanned railway systems
The Korean railway control system using wireless communications, which have relied on foreign technologies so far, will see its first, successful launching by purely domestic technologies.
KRTCS (Korea Radio Train Control System) can control the train’s departure, stop, routes and interval among trains by using remote radio communication, without a driver at the wheel.
since 2011, KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute)has engaged the private sector in a national project (“Standardization and Appraisal of Security of KRTCS) and formed a consortium between POSCO ICT (CEO: Choi, Doo Whan) and Samsung SDS (CEO: Jun, Dong Soo) to successfully develop required solutions, winning a global certificate that guarantees security and reliability of the solution.
In this project, POSCO ICT has developed on-board equipment capable of automatically controlling the speed of a train and interval between trains and conveying different types of status data for trains to a lagging system. Samsung SDS has introduced a ground system to receive and control train operating status.
Normally, a higher level of security and reliability is required of a railroad system. The system developed by these two companies has passed a comprehensive performance test conducted in a 11.26 Km-long KRTCS test section of Daebul Line, Muan-gun, Jeonnam. More recently it has obtained the highest safety standard, SIL (Safety Integrity Level) Level-4 from an overseas independent safety organization, which has opened the way for its faster commercialization.
SIL is a globally authorized, quantitative safety and stability measurement tool in electronics, electricity and signal areas of industrial equipment including railroads and nuclear power plants.
This project is significant since both the government and the private sector worked together to obtain a globally authorized certificate to help commercialize the railway control system. We will try to expand the benchmarking of our solutions nationwide and across the globe, on the basis of its safety and performance in terms of reliability as proven by the certificate awarded by the global SIL standard," an official of POSCO ICT said.
