POSCO ICT (President & CEO: Choi, Doo Whan) announced that it would make forays into the air quality control market of China, which is being plagued by fine dusts.
The company was selected as a candidate invited to the Korea-China Demonstration Project for the Prevention of Air Pollution in the Iron and Steel Industry.
Said project is a measure taken in connection with the MOU signed by the leaders of the two countries during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Korea in July 2014.
Under the collaboration project, the two countries will jointly invest in solving the problem of fine dusts created by iron and steel works in Shandong and Hebei Provinces in China using Korea’s environmental technologies.
Having been selected as a candidate solution provider for the project, POSCO ICT will hold an explanatory meeting on the relevant facilities for Chinese iron and steel businesses, including the Jinan Iron & Steel Group, for three days from April 15.
Chinese businesses plan to sign supply contracts after reviewing the equipment introduced by businesses selected as candidates using government subsidy. Thus, this is expected to provide Korean businesses with a good opportunity to make forays into the air environment market of China.
The Chinese government started applying new criterion on fine dust particles emission in January this year, i.e., 30mg/㎥ (ß 50mg/㎥) for powder metal sinter plants in steel mills. It is also replacing dilapidated facilities, among others.
POSCO ICT plans to supply the industrial electric dust-collecting facility it developed to said project.
The Company owns the equipment that removes fine dusts by having them absorbed into the dust-collecting board, using static electricity created by the Micro Pulse System (MPS).
In 2014, the Company supplied said facility to five thermal power plants belonging to the Datang Group in Hunan Province and signed another supply contract worth approximately 20 billion won early this year.
The dust-collecting facilities currently used in the Chinese industries have been said to have low efficiency in dust collection and consume lots of power.
The system developed and exported by POSCO ICT is said to be highly efficient, boasting of more than 50% improvement and saving more than 80% energy compared to conventional systems. An official of the company said that many Chinese iron and steel works and thermal power plants show high interest in its system, which can enhance their operational efficiency simply by replacing the facility without using additional dust-collecting equipment.
Commenting on said project, Vice President Lee Seung-ju of POSCO ICT revealed that they plan to broaden the local business foothold with focus on Chinese iron and steel works and thermal power plants this year. “As for the product lineup, we will shift the focus from large-capacity dust collectors to small and mid-sized ones, demand for which is expected to increase rapidly. We will strengthen our forays into the local market by developing convergence-type products complete with denitrification and desulfurization functions in addition to the dust collection function,” he added.
