POSCO ICT (CEO: Choi Doo-whan) is pushing through with full-scale entry into the environment market of China including prevention of air pollution such as dusts, smog, water treatment, and waste to energy through collaboration with the Shandong Provincial Government.
On August 26, POSCO ICT and Shandong Provincial Government held an MOU signing ceremony for collaboration in the environment project at the Seoul POSCO Center, with company officials including POSCO CEO Kwon Oh-joon and POSCO ICT CEO Choi Doo-whan and officials concerned from the provincial government attending the ceremony. From China, a delegation consisting of government officials including Governor Guo Shuqing(郭树清) , Commerce Department Director She Chunmin (佘春明) , etc., and Shandong Iron and Steel Group Company Chairman Renhao (任浩) came to Korea on July 24.
There are many different factories such as steel plant, power generation plant, coal mines, glass factories, and cement factories discharging a lot of pollutants in Shandong Province. Through the conclusion of MOU, POSCO ICT will be able to supply its environment system including industrial dust collector. In China, a new air environment emission standard that strengthened the dust discharge standard of steel plants from 80mg to 50mg was implemented in January this year in an effort to solve the air pollution problem; this has led to a sharp growth of the market related to the environment as seen from the drastically increased replacement demand for the existing deteriorated facilities.
The conclusion of MOU could be attributed to the fact that POSCO ICT was selected as a candidate company of the “Korea-China Air Pollution Prevention Demo Project in the Steel Sector” last April; this tied in closely with the main concern of the Shandong Provincial Government, i.e., the resolution of environmental issues. This project is a cooperation project that has been jointly planned and supported by both governments in order to dispose harmful substances generated from the industrial sites of China by utilizing the environment technologies of Korea as a follow-up measure of the Memorandum of Understanding concerning the environment between Korea and China, which was concluded when China President Xi Jinping visited Korea in July last year.
Companies in China are able to secure the environment system required using the support fund, and Korean companies were given the foundation based on which the technologies concerned can be exported to China. In fact, POSCO ICT concluded an MOU with the Shandong Luli Steel last month for the supply of the environment system, and for discussions with several steel plants in Shandong Province such as Shandong Taishan Steel, etc., are underway.
The outstanding performance of POSCO ICT’s industrial dust collector was widely recognized by its benefits from lower investment cost, operating cost, and efficient energy saving. In fact, the product was certified as the highest national-level technology by the Association of Electric Power Companies in China. Thanks to such advantage, POSCO ICT was able to supply the system 5 thermal power plants in the Datang Corporation located in Hunan Province and conclude a supply contract worth approximately 20 billion won.
“We will further expand the local business foundation this year such as business references with China’s steel plants and power plants. For the product lineup, small and mid-sized products with increasing demand as well as convergence-type product with not only dust collection function but also a function designed to remove harmful substances will be introduced in addition to the existing large-capacity dust collector in order to strengthen the local marketing activities,” a POSCO ICT official said.
The industrial dust collector developed and sold by POSCO ICT is designed to remove fine dusts discharged by having the dusts attach to the surface of the dust collection plate using electrostatic force generated by high–voltage pulse by utilizing MPS (Micro Pulse System) technology. The advantage of MPS over the existing technology is that the dust removal rate is improved up to 50% or more, whereas energy use is reduced by 80% or more. In particular, efficiency could be raised through equipment replacement only without the expansion of the existing dust collection facilities; while significantly reducing the investment cost.
On the other hand, CEO Kwon Oh-joon, who had talks with Shandong Province Governor Guo Shuqing prior to the signing ceremony, said that the collaboration with Shandong Province reminds him of the lesson given by Mencius — appropriate timing and geographical benefit especially harmony among people are very important. “I hope that the conclusion of this MOU will provide a good opportunity for companies in Shandong Province to deal aggressively with the environment contamination issue by using the experience and technology retained by POSCO ICT and the support to be provided by Shandong Provincial Government,” he added.
