POSCO ICT (President & CEO: Choi, Doo Whan) is launching the home charging infrastructure business for electric vehicles.
POSCO ICT, which is operating the largest electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the domestic market, plans to build home charging infrastructure for “Ionic Electric,” the new electric vehicle to be launched by Hyundai Motor Company this June. POSCO ICT built and operated charging infrastructure in large-scale convenience facilities such as large marts, theaters, hotels, etc., and it is pushing ahead with business expansion by building home charging infrastructure.
The electric vehicle charger for home use -- developed by POSCO ICT in preparation for Ionic to be launched by Hyundai -- was designed using the latter’s unique design for Hyundai vehicles and was reduced in size (40 x 40 x 30cm) compared to the existing public charger to enable users to use it conveniently by fix on the wall or stand. In particular, in order to help users ease the financial burden of paying “progressive electricity rates” when power consumption drastically increases due to electric vehicle charging, POSCO ICT plans to build separate charging infrastructure independent from the existing electrical grid.
POSCO ICT has been building charging infrastructure particularly about 120 charging machines at LG Best Shop, theaters, and department stores since last year in preparation for the “SONATA PLUG-IN HYBRID” launched by Hyundai. In 2014, it built 120 charging machines at about 80 E-Mart stores in the nation for the BMW electric vehicle “i3”; it is operating 250 charging machines in the nation including Jeju. This is the largest charging infrastructure operated by a private company.
POSCO ICT’s charging infrastructure has been mainly built and operated at convenience facilities such as large marts, outlet malls, theaters, etc., which are frequently visited by vehicle drivers in their daily life; therefore, drivers can easily charge their electric vehicles within a driving range of 5 km or less.
On the basis of the advantage as mentioned, cooperative relations between POSCO ICT and electric vehicle manufacturers are expected to further expand. Since electric vehicle manufacturers can use their own charging infrastructure compatibly through cooperation with POSCO ICT, they are able to resolve the shortage of charging infrastructure, which was viewed as the primary obstacle to the expanded distribution of electric vehicles.
