POSCO ICT (President & CEO Choi, Doo Whan) has recorded consecutive successful performances in the environmental business field that applies to many power plants and industrial sites at home and abroad with its leading-edge composite technology of disposing major air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).
POSCO ICT and the Yeongdong division of Korea South-East Power Co. (KOEN) have agreed to establish jointly an environmental system for reducing the nitrogen oxide emissions of units 1 and 2 of the Yeongdong thermal power plant. The Yeongdong division of KOEN is working on extending the life of unit 2 by improving it into an eco-friendly plant that can reduce air pollution, and the division will also convert unit 1 into a biomass power plant in early 2017.
POSCO ICT will build eco-friendly infrastructure that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from the thermal power plant into harmless nitrogen and water by triggering a chemical reaction in the nitrogen oxides. POSCO ICT will take on the whole process from design and construction to test run. The total project size is about 20 billion KRW. With this project, the emission of nitrogen oxides by the Yeongdong thermal power plant is estimated to decrease by as much as 90% of the existing level.
POSCO ICT has succeeded in securing world-class composite technology for disposing of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, which are regarded as major air pollutants. It has exported electric precipitators to power plants and steelworks in China since it was selected as the operator of the “Korea-China Pilot Project for Reducing Particulate Matter.” In addition, in the area of disposing of nitrogen oxides, POSCO ICT has already done active business at home and abroad to supply a de-nox system to power plants such as Incheon complex power plant.
This project has given POSCO ICT an opportunity to expand environmental business for disposing of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides in domestic industries and overseas power plants and steelworks. In addition, POSCO ICT plans to implement a smart power plant that can maximize operating efficiency by collecting and analyzing all the relevant data within the plant, utilizing IoT, big data, artificial intelligence, and other ICT technologies.
The Korean government will invest approximately 10 trillion KRW until 2030 in the improvement of performance of coal-fired thermal power plants that have been operated over 20 years and the installation of facilities for reducing air pollution emissions, among others. The demand for the replacement of old facilities grows as the Chinese government applies strict criteria for the emission of pollutants from industries. The global market size related to the atmospheric environment in regions such as Southeast Asia and Middle East is also on the rise.
