- POSCO ICT Construct Pohang and Gwangyang steel mills’s smart data center start from  the Designs to infrastructure.
- Integrates all IT facilities spread out in the steel mills and lays the foundation for the operation of a smart factory

POSCO ICT (CEO Choi Doo-whan) begin construction of smart data centers at POSCO’s Pohang and Gwangyang steel mills.

Last March, construction began at the Pohang steel mill for the smart data center, which will be three stories high with gross area of 7,313㎡. The first floor contain  the electricity room, emergency generator room, and air conditioner room. The control room and IT equipment such as servers, storages, and network equipment will be located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. POSCO ICT expects to complete all stages of this project from the design of the smart data center to the construction of the infrastructure by June 2019. The project will cost about 65.2 billion Korean won. In the second half of this year, POSCO ICT will also begin construction of the data center for its Gwangyang steel mill.

By completing construction of the smart data centers, POSCO will lay the groundwork for consolidating the operations of IT facilities that are currently spread out in its central computing center at its headquarters and the factories.

Especially, POSCO will have an infrastructure environment that will enable it to run the mills as a smart factory as a project that it has been pursuing. In a smart factory environment, IoT sensors installed in critical equipment collect more than 80,000 types of micro data in real time. The micro data are then analyzed, and projections are made using big data.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence is now being used to support optimal manufacturing which is reason for construction Data Center.  According to POSCO, this trend toward a more data-centric work environment makes the construction of data centers essential for the company. In fact, POSCO ICT is producing tangible results in its data center operation business. This year, the company became a participant  in the data center project being pursued for the Supreme Court.

POSCO ICT is planning to grow its data center business further this year. By leveraging its know-how in data center operations, POSCO ICT intends to pursue aggressively participation in new data center constructions and operations projects being planned by public  institution this year.
