- Develops and operates the home charging station for Hyundai vehicle drivers in 2018
- Provides total service including the establishment and operation of the largest recharging infrastructure in Korea and membership management

POSCO ICT (CEO Choi, Doo Whan) was selected as a preferred bidder for next year’s home charging station supply and operation project for Hyundai car customers who purchase an electric car.

Accordingly, POSCO ICT will supply and operate on behalf of Hyundai Motors home charging stations for customers who purchase “Kona EV,” a small SUV electric car model that will be released next year, and “Ioniq Electric” that is currently on sale. Considering the unique characteristics of Korea, i.e., most people are living in multiple-dwelling housing like an apartment, POSCO ICT will provide comprehensive membership service for subscribers, including securing the space for charging station installation as the biggest concern of electric car buyers and configuring the electrical grid and installing the charging station.

More than 15,000 electric cars have already been sold, meeting the government’s target for this year; some expect more than 20,000 electric cars by the end of this year. According to statistics published by the Ministry of Environment, Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a best-selling model with sales volume of about 10,000 cars. In terms of charging infrastructure, POSCO ICT has installed and operated 500 shared charging stations and 4,000 home charging stations and recruited about 5,000 membership customers. Thus, POSCO ICT is the largest private service provider in Korea. With the charging problem solved through cooperation among the largest service providers in Korea, the market expects the diffusion of the electric car to be given a boost.

POSCO ICT is preparing a sharing service that enables Hyundai vehicle customers to share others’ home charging stations and identify the location of available home charging stations by using the smart phone. Besides, if the charging station cannot be installed at home, a small charger that can be inserted into the 220V power socket at home will be supplied. In this way, various services will be provided according to the customer’s situation.

“POSCO ICT has shown the best performance in Korea by providing total service encompassing charging infrastructure supply, installation, and operation, membership management, and additional service. POSCO ICT will support the spread of the electric car by providing various additional services using its own charging platform ‘ChargEV’ and will grow as the best charging service provider in Korea,” said Kim Jonghyeon, executive director of POSCO ICT.

On the other hand, POSCO ICT has installed and operated 500 shared charging stations at large-sized marts (e.g., E-Mart throughout the country), theaters, hotels, and outlets since 2014. POSCO ICT also provides roaming service that shares charging stations installed by the Ministry of Environment and KEPCO throughout the country. Therefore, a customer can use any of the 2,100 charging stations all over the country by signing up for the membership card issued by POSCO ICT.
