At 6 PM, employees from different organizations gather together with a laptop in their hands. The goal is to share the outcomes of AI project they studied up until the last week and to select the topics of next study. They are members of the AI study group and they normally get together after the day to study various aspects of AI technology. They all say getting together is a good idea as they can have advantages of learning from each other.
Our company's employees are working hard to learn smart technology. As the fourth industrial revolution enters the main phase, new technologies such as AI, big data, and block chains are newly emerging every day, and as a result, they need to improve personal technological abilities. In the past, the company had been providing every employee with training to improve their level of understanding in smart technology and operating expert training programs for the topics. As a result, many employees felt that they needed to improve their technical knowledge and increasingly more employees volunteer for training.
Employees are operating study groups focusing on their favorite topics. In the early phase, they focus on literature and journals and then proceed to the phase of project execution. They invite external experts and participate in developers’ forums to be able to execute the project on their own.
As employees participate in such activities, the company begins to provide various supports such as education participation and book purchases costs and offices, and as a result, increasingly more employees become interested in it. Since 2016, study groups have been launched and at present, there are 164 study groups. The research projects executed by the study group became official projects of the company and linked to commercialization and so on. In last November, the AI study group yielded an outcome of AI system development tool called 'Tensor MSA' that received the award of NIPA president and also they were able to successfully develop an AI-based facial detection entry system by using the results. The system is in test operation at Pangyo office and it will be later commercialized through system advancement.
Similarly, a very unique activity called Skunk Works is currently taking place. After gathering brainstorming ideas, a project item is issued and then volunteering employees are selected from the entire company. They are given one or two months to turn the ideas into more specifics and discover a new business model. The skunk works activity is currently being commercialized by developing AI-based security solutions applicable to industrial control systems. As smart factory is applied to the industrial site, the previous site facility and control system that used to separately operate are now linked together, so when an external invader is found, it can cause a fatal damage, but the AI can successfully detect them in real time and block them successfully.
Employees participating in the AI study group 'HOYA' say “ We used to be very much interested in AI processing technology and started forming a study group after learning that there are many of them like us,” and added, “ as new technology emerges every day, we have to improve our skills on new technology” An authority from the company said, “As the technology rapidly evolves while entering the fourth industrial revolution, it is critical that we have to create culture where we can improve competitiveness of organization as well as employees.”
