POSCO ICT Runs ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth’ Volunteer Program

- Providing 6 months of education on Scratch Coding to improve the creativity of the children from low-income families

- Employees in the company serve as professional lecturers to promote social contribution activities on the basis of the company’s business expertise

POSCO ICT (Representative: Son Geon-Jae) has held the ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth’ to provide education on Scratch Coding for children of families in need. ‘Scratch’ is a learning tool developed by MIT to help children understand coding and acquire the ability to develop algorithms easily so that they can improve their creativity. 
 
POSCO ICT said the company has begun the first ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth’ for the 20 higher grade students of elementary school and middle school belonging to families in need. The class was held in Seongnam region on April 13 at Pangyo Company Building. The program will continue for 6 months, from April to September, on Saturdays every other week.   
 
Recently, creativity development has become a major trend of education, but it is not easy for children of low-income families to receive the education. In this regard, POSCO ICT has decided to provide them with the opportunity to receive the education on the trendy Scratch Coding so that they can cultivate their thinking ability and improve creativity, teamwork, and problem solving skills through various methods of education including participation in team projects. 
 
In the ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth,’ the students will first receive software education with various coding tools such as Scratch and Unplugged to cultivate logical thinking and study and draw the methods to solve problems gradually. After that, they will develop the ability to think of new ideas by themselves by participating in team projects and materializing the ideas with software. 
 
The ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth’ is taught by the staff members of POSCO ICT who have completed the Professional Instructor Training Course for teaching of Scratch Coding after volunteering to be professional instructors for children. The instructors were also trained on the ‘Psychology of Children and Teenagers’ to be able to understand young students and communicate well with them.  
 
Manager Kwon Ji-Eun, who is working as a professional instructor in the program, said, “I sent an application to be a professional instructor immediately after seeing the advertisement because I thought it was a really good program. I think it is worthwhile to share my knowledge with the students who are first exposed to Coding by contributing my talent accumulated in the IT area so far.”  

POSCO ICT is planning to run the ‘Coding Class for Talented Youth’ continuously to provide substantive assistance for the children in need using the characteristic of the company business. Moreover, the company is keen to discover various social contribution activities to practice the vision of POSCO Group: 'Corporate Citizenship Building a Better Future Together.'
