- Set to partner with global leading drive manufacturer Danfoss to manufacture drives
- Full-scale field application to begin next year following development in October and field testing by the end of the year
POSCO ICT (CEO: Geon-jae Son) is set to enter the business of manufacturing drive, which controls motors in industrial sites.
A drive is a control system that controls the rotating speed, direction, and transmission power of a motor as the driving unit most widely used in industrial sites. POSCO ICT plans to manufacture drives by cooperating with global leading drive manufacturer Danfoss. Since merging with another global drive manufacturer, Finland-based Vacon, in 2016, Denmark-based Danfoss has been the world’s leading manufacturer of drives.
Cooperating with Danfoss will enable POSCO ICT to manufacture drives specializing in continuous processes like steelmaking by combining its engineering capability in the steel area and Danfoss’s drive manufacturing know-how. POSCO ICT has a wide drive product portfolio that ranges from small capacity (0.55 kW) to large capacity (2,000 kW).
According to the company, it expects to be able to increase the price competitiveness of its products by using the same control board in drives of various capacities to minimize the number of partners and use the same power hardware module for the converter, inverter, and control units. POSCO ICT plans to complete development by October and field testing by the end of the year so that it can launch the business next year. It intends to apply them in the manufacturing business including steel mills, and then expand the application to other industrial sites.
“We plan to begin field application next year following development in October and field testing by the end of the year. We expect to build a wide product lineup from small to large capacity and supply competitive drive products in terms of quality and price,” said POSCO ICT Director Yun Yeong-hee.
