- POSCO ICT has won Daegu Food Waste Recycling Plant Project

Food wastes created from our everyday life will be reborn as livestock feeds and renewable energy sources.

POSCO ICT, created through the merger of POSDATA and POSCON, won the order for the Food Waste Recycling Plant Project of Kyungdong Industry. The Plant will recycle food wastes collected from Daegu-si and Gyeongsan-si into livestock feed materials.

POSCO ICT’s role in this KRW 21 billion project is to establish an overall infrastructure for the food waste recycling, oil extraction, and waste water processing systems by the end of this year.

The food waste recycling center be built in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, having a daily processing capacity of 300 tons, and its systems will be able to produce 9,300 tons of livestock feeds per year.

The recycling center will also flawlessly process waste water, which accounts for 85% of food wastes. It will process 255 tons of waste water per hour to the meet the quality requirement for disposal into the river, BOD 30ppm or less. In comparison to the sea-based waste water disposal method widely used today, it is expected to cut down the processing cost by KRW 40,000 per ton.

Furthermore, the center will be used to extract oil from food wastes to produce 2,300 tons of household fuel per year. It will also re-collect waste heat generated in the drying process and use it for the heating of the plant facilities. Through this project, Daegu-si and Gyeongsan-si will acquire not only the facilities to safely process food wastes but also the venue for education on waste recycling and related energy generation.

A representative from POSCO ICT explained, “Food waste water has mostly been dumped in the sea, but such an activity will be prohibited by international law after 2012. This makes the establishment of food waste recycling facilities a very urgent task. The recent increase in the public interest on the environment has also led to the demand growth for related facilities from local governments.”

POSCO ICT is pushing forward with the establishment of incinerator control, MPS & MPC, and water works and waste water processing systems necessary for the safe processing of pollutants created in daily life.
