- For Localization of Subway Platform Screen Doors jointly with Dongwoo AutoDoor and Advancement into the International Market
POSCO ICT (CEO Hur Nam-Suk) was jointly awarded the Minister of Knowledge Economy Award for excellence in innovative win-win cooperation between enterprises on May 27 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry building, for successfully localizing and exporting subway platform screen doors (PSD) in partnership with Dongwoo AutoDoor.
Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) that the two corporations jointly developed help improve climate control by isolating subway platforms from tracks resulting in reduced air pollution and noise. PSDs also help prevent accidental falls from the tracks and reduce air pollution and noise. In 2005, the South Korean government made it mandatory to install screen doors in all subway stations in the capital area and all newly built stations. The PSD market began to expand, heightening the need for localized Platform Screen Doors.
POSCO ICT began developing PSD technologies in collaboration with Dongwoo AutoDoor. POSCO ICT provided support for securing patents for PSD technologies. The two outfits worked together to advance into the domestic and overseas market. In 2008, POSCO ICT succeeded in commercial production of screen doors and supplied them to the subway systems in Seoul and Gwangju. And in 2009 and 2010, it succeeded in supplying PSD products to Lines 2, 3 and 4 of the subway system in San Paolo, Brazil. With these successful projects, POSCO ICT and Dongwoo AutoDoors built a foundation for advancing into the international market. The two companies' success in the joint PSD project have been regarded as having made considerable contribution to increased use of localized PSDs.
Going forward, POSCO ICT, jointly with Dongwoo AutoDoors, plans to market their PSD products to make inroads into the South American market including Argentina, and the Asian market including Taiwan and Vietnam. To improve technology prowess, POSCO ICT plans to hold monthly technology exchange meetings with Dongwoo AutoDoors and support training of Dongwoo Autodoor employees in advanced technologies. POSCO ICT has already owned two PSD-related patents.
