POSCO ICT (CEO, Hur Nam-suk) has been localizing the programmable logic controller (hereafter “PLC”) for nuclear power plants, and received approval for officially supplying the PLC to ShinUljin Nuclear Power Plant #1.

Since the conclusion of the agreement with Doosan Heavy Industries last May, regarding the supply of PLCs to ShinUljin Nuclear Power Plant #1 and #2, POSCO ICT has been testing the system for one year to verify its stability and reliability. POSCO ICT announced that it will also provide related products to ShinUljin Nuclear Power Plant #2, after delivering products for ShinUljin Nuclear Power Plant #1.

The PLC is a core system that performs the instrumentation and control for a nuclear power plant. The PLC plays the role of a nerve network that shuts down a nuclear reactor quickly, when a serious defect occurs at the nuclear power plant, by stopping the operation of a control rod.

POSCO ICT successfully developed the PLC by participating in the Localization Development Project for Next-generation New Nuclear Power Plan Control and Instrument Devices, which was managed by the 'Korea Nuclear Instrumentation and Control System (KNICS)' under the management of the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy for 7 years, from 2001 to 2008.

Starting from product supply on this occasion, POSCO ICT expects to achieve the import substitution effects, by supplying products to new power plants, and replacing the PLCs that are currently used in domestic power plants.

POSCO ICT will also actively develop a nuclear power plant projects in overseas countries, by using the related system.

“The self-reliance ratio of nuclear power plant technology in Korea has been upgraded to the next level, as the nuclear power plant PLC, which is commercialized only with domestic technology, is officially supplied to ShinUljin Nuclear Power Plant #1. We will actively develop the market for new domestic and overseas nuclear power plants, and the market for parts replacement at existing nuclear power plants,” said one POSCO ICT official.
