POSCO ICT’s BHS handled over 300 million pieces of baggage at Incheon International Airport

- Technical competence has been confirmed again by its stable management after the successful completion of BHS Phases 1 and 2.
- As of this year POSCO ICT has been operating the overall communication infrastructure, besides the BHS.

The accumulated number of pieces of baggage handled by Incheon International Airport's BHS (Baggage Handling System),which has been developed and operated by POSCO ICT (CEO Hur Nam-Suk), passed the 300 million mark on the 20th of this month.

POSCO ICT received an order for Phase 1 of the Incheon International Airport BHS development project in 1996, and successfully completed the project in 2001. As a result, POSCO ICT was able to contribute to the successful opening of Incheon International Airport. POSCO ICT also received an order for Phase 2 of the project, and has been operating the system until now.

The BHS reads a tag that is attached to the passenger’s check-in baggage and sorts the baggage according to the final destination. The BHS is composed of the departure baggage system, transit baggage system, arrival baggage system, large-size and early received baggage system, and integrated operation and maintenance system.

The BHS at Incheon Airport is a large-scale facility that is 88km long (21km in Phase 1 and 67km in Phase 2), and it is a core system that plays the role of being the main arteries of the airport.

It is reported that the BHS at Incheon Airport is up to 5 times more accurate than major airports in Europe and U.S.

Normally, the accuracy of the BHS is evaluated by the number of offloaded pieces of baggage per every 100,000 pieces ofbaggage. Last year, European airports and U.S. airports (domestic) recorded 20 and 7 offloaded pieces of baggage respectively, whereas Incheon Airport recorded only 4 offloaded pieces of baggage (0.004%). Therefore, Incheon Airport achieved the world’s best accuracy.

POSCO ICT, besides the airport BHS, also began to provide the operation service for the overall communication infrastructure as of this year.

By making the most of this project, POSCO ICT will activelyenter the overseas market, as it possesses the best technical skills and references in the airport area. It will do so by extending the business area from the development and operation of BHS Phases 1 and 2 to the communication infrastructure area.
