- Agreement on the Operation of the Airport Baggage Handling System (BHS)…an 85 billion USD contract for 3 years
- An error tolerance of 4 for 100,000 pieces of baggage…the world’s best accuracy

POSCO ICT (represented by Heo Namseok) won an order to provide a comprehensive management and system improvement service for the BHS (Baggage Handling System) for Incheon International Airport. This 85 billion USD contract is a three-year-long project, which begins on Sept 1st, 2012 and ends on Aug 31, 2015.

In 1996, the company won an order of building the 1st baggage handling system for Incheon International Airport, and completed the project in 2001, contributing to successful opening of the airport, followed by another order to build the 2nd system. The company has continuously provided service for Incheon International Service, for both system building and operation.

The BHS is a combined logistics management system for reading the tags of baggage trusted by airport passengers and it automatically classifies and conveys each piece of baggage all the way to the destination. This system reaches 21 km in the first block and 67 km in the second, total of 88 km-long. This large equipment is known to serve as the artery of the airport.

The BHS of Incheon International Airport has received an evaluation that it is 5 times superior to major airports in U.S., in terms of precision. The precision of a traditional baggage handling system is estimated with the number of unloaded pieces of baggage per 100,000 of baggage ; while the European and North American domestic airlines 20 and 7 unloaded baggage, last year, Incheon Airport registered 4, an error fact of 0.004%.

In regards to the amount of baggage handling, the system handled only 124 million pieces of consigned baggage in 2001, which was the first year of opening the service, but this grew by 7.8% annually to reach a cumulative number of 0.1 billion in June, 2006 and over 0.3 billion, this year. 0.3 billion pieces of baggage standing in a line represents a length of 270,000 km, which is the distance of 330 round-trips between Seoul and Busan or 7 times the circumference of the earth.

“Following the operation of the BHS for airports, we are also providing a service for the operation of the entire communications infrastructure, beginning this year,” said an official at POSCO ICT, “Driven by our experiences and knowhow in areas like baggage handling and communications infrastructure, we are planning to advance into overseas markets, through cooperation with competent agencies.”
