POSCO ICT (CEO Hur Nam-Suk) announced that they completed the construction of Chungju cloud data center and will start operation in full scale.

The Chungju Cloud Data Center is a smart data center equipped with advanced systems and infrastructure facilities that can provide 24/7 non-stop operations in extraordinary circumstances like an earthquake and flooding. In addition, it is a green data center that manages power usage in real time using the energy saving solution, adopts the energy saving air and water cooling method, and applies many high-efficiency devices like LED lighting. The system and facility of the data center will be monitored first from the control room inside the data center. The data center will also be monitored by the comprehensive control room at Pangyo Command Center, and the system's seamless operation will be guaranteed by a real-time control from this center.

By taking advantage of this Chungju data center launch, POSCO ICT will provide a cloud computing service as a demonstration, starting with desktop virtualization. POSCO ICT will increase efficiency even further by installing the system that allocates and manages IT resources dynamically upon customers’ various business environments.

"As we now operates the global-level data center, we laid the foundation of upgrading IT services to a far higher level, with the infrastructure that can operate POSPIA 3.0 in a stable manner, which will be a key system to achieve POSCO Family's "Vision 2020." The Chungju cloud data center will play a pivotal role in supporting affiliate company's global business in the future, including POSCO," said one POSCO ICT official.

The site area of the Chungju cloud data center is 12,758㎡ (3,860 pyeong), and the total ground area is 7,742㎡ (2,343 pyeong). The center has three basement levels. The electricity facility such as electric transformers, power generators, and UPS, and control room are located on the first floor, whereas the second and third floor will be used as computing rooms.

POSCO ICT undertook data center construction last year November and completed construction this year July. Since then, facility tests and trial operation have been conducted. IT resources of POSCO and 16 affiliated companies were moved from the Bundang data center to the Chungju data center in three phases between August 1 and October 14, 2012.
