POSCO ICT developed a TMS (Tele Monitoring System) solution that monitors pollutants emitted from chimneys at industrial sites and start commercializing it.
TMS is a system that automatically measures the amount and concentration of air pollutants emitted from chimneys at production sites 24 hours a day and transmits them to four regional control centers nationwide under the Ministry of Environment. The measurement items are dust, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen fluoride, and the results are provided in real time through the website operated by the Korea Environment Corporation.
The Ministry of Environment enacted the "Special Act on the Improvement of Air Environment in the Atmospheric Management Area" in 2019 and has been in effect since April this year with the aim of reducing the average annual ultrafine dust concentration by 33 percent by 2024. The "Air management area" system, which was only implemented in the Seoul metropolitan area, has been expanded to areas with high pollution (Busan/Ulsan, Yeosu/Gwangyang, and Chungcheong provinces). Under the Atmospheric Management Area Act, businesses with emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and dust exceeding 80 tons per year will be designated as total management sites, and all emission chimneys will be obliged
to have TMS attached, and if they exceed the permissible level, they will be subject to administrative measures such as suspension of operation or fines.
POSCO ICT's TMS solution consists of two pieces of equipment: Data Logger and FEP(Front End Processor). Data Logger collects, calibrates, stores, and transmits concentrations of various pollutants emitted from chimneys every 5 seconds from the measuring instrument to the higher device.
FEP collects data received by a number of Data Loggers and sends it to the Environment Ministry Control Center and the Integrated Environmental Management System in the workplace, and remotely provides the real-time operation status and history management functions.
POSCO ICT developed the solution and won a certification in August with all 28 test items of the Korea Environment Corporation's air pollution process test standards were satisfied. Currently, TMS is being built for POSCO's steel mills, and in the future, the company plans to expand its business by supplying TMS to industrial facilities such as oil refining, chemicals and power plants.
