POSCO ICT (CEO Bong-Rae Cho) announced that it will, soon, embark on a Micro Grid building project, including Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in cooperation with a Japanese battery maker and vendor, Edison Power.
In this joint project, the company will supply 1MW BESS to Edison Power’s research complex including a plant now under construction in Kitamori, Chiba, Japan, establishing a Micro Grid environment which enables independent energy production and consumption based on a power generation infrastructure using photovoltaic energy.
Edison Power is going to sell all across Tokyo, the 2MW power energy produced in this complex. 2MW represents an amount of power that can serve 1,000 households for a month. The BESS that POSCO ICT is slated to supply is a system that stores power energies into batteries and makes use of it as needed, which is essential for reliable supply of power produced through unreliable new and renewable energies such as solar or wind power to each household, interconnected with existing power supply systems.
Since the power plant accident, last year, the Japan’s power market has been formed around a small-capacity home ESS designed in case of emergency. However, as the Japanese government recently began to aid renewable energy generation including wind and solar, by investing 20 billion yen and adopted a policy to buy all the power generated, BESS market is rapidly growing.
Driven by this rapid growth of BESS market in Japan, these two companies will embark on a full-fledged project targeting large-capacity ESS market, by making use of Kitamori complex as reference. POSCO ICT will supply its BESS to Edison Power, which will in turn take the role of sole distributor in Japan, in charge of local marketing and sales.
