POSCO ICT Promotes Energy Efficiency Business in Full Scale

2013.10.16

- Advanced the energy efficiency solution that can be applied to cities, factories, and buildings
- To target overseas markets in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia as well as domestic industry fields and buildings.

POSCO ICT (CEO Bong-Rae Cho) newly released the Smart EMS solution, which analyzes the energy flow of the industry field and building in real time manner to support efficient management.

The Smart EMS is composed of FEMS (Factory Energy Management System) and BEMS (Building Energy Management System).

It is recognized that the FEMS has analyzed 10,000 cases of energy saving in the domestic and overseas industry fields including POSCO, and reflected the effective and outstanding cases that can be applied easily, and significantly strengthened the data collection and analysis function for energy efficiency.

Actually, the solution provides the effect of informing the proper maintenance time point, by detecting performance deterioration and problems, based on the analysis of facility’s energy consumption.

In addition, the solution is equipped with the function that operates the facility mainly at night when electric rates are low, considering that the rate system for business is different in the daytime and at night.

POSCO ICT explains that it is the first commercialized solution, which proposes efficient operation by analyzing waste factors through energy consumption monitoring in the manufacturing industry; and comparing energy consumption of the individual plant and facility in real time.
The IBM’s platform is applied to the FEMS.

Since the conclusion of the cooperation agreement between POSCO ICT and IBM last October, two companies have been designing a solution in joint, and completed the development of the related system recently.

As the solution is based on the platform, stability and reliability can be improved, and the development period can be reduced by more than 30%.
Two companies plan to expand the business continuously to the global market, including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, as well as domestic manufacturing industry, by carrying out joint marketing using the FEMS.
For this, the meeting for business cooperation was held at Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul on the last 15th with the participation of POSCO ICT officials including CEO Bong-Rae Cho and vice-president In-Bong Lee; and IBM officials including Steven Worrall, the vice president of IBM Global Industry Solutions and Park, Won-seop, vice-president of IBM Korea.

The BEMS, another axis of the smart EMS, can manage energy such as the air conditioning system, lighting, and cooling/hot water, as well as the facility like an elevator.

In particular, the solution provides an optimal operation guide by removing efficient operation factors, and analyzing the consumption pattern through energy consumption monitoring.

The customized system can be developed that applies the characteristics of the building (commercial building, hospital, university, hotel, and office). Also, the function is provided that can manage many buildings from the central control center at a time, by developing a cloud-based system.

“The energy efficiency market is expected to keep a sharp growth trend every year due to an energy shortage crisis, and the market size will be 2.5 trillion won at home and 86 trillion won in the global market. By taking the opportunity of solution release on this occasion, POSCO ICT will actively develop the energy efficiency market in the industry and city,” said Deok-gyun Jeong, Director (Managing Director) of Solution Development Center, POSCO ICT.
