POSCO ICT and POSTECH have launched a "AI Industry-Academic Integrated Research Center" to jointly develop and commercialize AI-related technologies.

The two organizations signed an MOU for the establishment of the research center and held a ceremony at Pohang POSTECH on the 28th with major officials, including President Kim Moo-hwan of POSTECH and President Jung Duk-kyoon of POSCO ICT. The AI Industry-Academic Integrated Research Center has been established at the Artificial Intelligence Institute of POSTECH.

The AI Industry-Academic Integrated Research Center plans to jointly carry out various research tasks in the safety management, logistics management, production and quality control of industrial sites that apply AI to develop and commercialize technologies. The plan is to create synergy through close technical exchanges, such as POSCO ICT AI researchers and POSTECH professors residing at the research center and conducting research activities together.

Prior to this, since May, the two organizations have been conducting technical workshops to operate the center and have been discovering tasks that will be jointly carried out. Through this, they will select AI-based image recognition and analysis technologies that can be applied to steel mill sites and joint research tasks to secure technologies that detect abnormalities in the manufacturing facilities, and start the task in earnest from August. Along with the performance of the project, the company plans to cooperate in various fields such as academic and technical information exchange, exchange and training researchers, and joint use of research facilities.

In particular, POSCO ICT plans to collaborate by receiving technical advice from an advisory group composed of professors from the Artificial Intelligence Institute to solve issues related to AI, such as smart factory, smart safety, and smart logistics.

"We expect that we will increase AI technology competitiveness in industrial sites and create greater social value by applying AI technology to actual industrial sites through POSCO ICT-POSTECH AI Industry Center." said Seo Young-joo, director of AI Research Institute at POSTECH.

"Through this MOU, we can expect synergy by strengthening technology competitiveness in AI field and securing core technologies necessary for commercialization by utilizing POSTECH's AI experts and excellent research infrastructure," said Suk Jae-ho, head of POSCO ICT's technology development center.
