POSCO ICT launches AI Control Tower

2022.03.15

POSCO ICT integrates AI capabilities within the organization and leads AI technology in the industry. Industrial AI Research (IAR) has been newly established early this month and began full-scale operation.

POSCO ICT plans to integrate AI and other smart technology engineers, which have been operated by unit organizations, to increase synergy between organizations and quickly implement AI Control Tower functions by developing, commercializing, and spreading core technologies necessary for industrial sites through IAR.

POSCO ICT AI engineers plan to operate under a "Matrix" structure that plays a role in developing AI-related core technologies under the newly established IAR and immediately applying the technologies by belonging to business organizations to product development and field projects. Through this, it is possible to establish a system that can maximize organizational flexibility for commercialization of research results, strengthen the expertise of AI research, and jointly utilize research-related products.

The new IAR is a practical research organization focusing on AI's industrial application and consists of five specialized labs: Vision Lab, Anomaly Detection Lab, Big Data Analysis Lab, Content Mining Lab, and Data Engineering Lab. Through this, the company expects that the AI development methodology will be integrated with the product development process to effectively respond to the explosive demand for AI technologies in the group, such as POSCO Steel Mill and Smart Factory.

Dr. Yoon Il-yong, who joined POSCO ICT last year after leading Hyundai Motor's robotics lab robot intelligence team, will be in charge of the newly operated IAR. The company plans to further expand the recruitment of AI experts at home and abroad in the future, while hiring additional engineers in the field of Digital Twin and Metabus.

Meanwhile, POSCO ICT supports domestic and foreign smart factories in safety management, logistics management, facility abnormality detection, and production and quality management through big data analysis by applying AI technology to manufacturing sites such as steel, heavy industry, and smelting. In addition, by applying Vision AI technology to POSCO Smart CCTV, it recognizes abnormal behavior such as workers' collapse or the wearing of safety equipment such as helmets, gloves, and protective clothing to high-risk workplaces to maintain safety.
