POSCO ICT (CEO, Bong-Rae Cho) has been implementing a project that makes the island free of any fossil fuel consumption, by applying the engineering technology related to its energy storage system on Gapado, Jeju; and resolves the most difficult problem for normal operation.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has been implementing the independent power grid development project that supplies energy generated by wind power and photovoltaic power generators stably to each customer, using the large-capacity ESS, based on the plan of making Gapado as a clean island with no carbon emission.
However, the project has been challenged by interoperability with existing ESS and renewable energy sources.
As the output of renewable energy like wind power and photovoltaic power is unstable, depending on the weather condition, the power storage device “ESS” should be applied to store electrical power and stabilize power transmission to the customer.
To overcome technical difficulties, Jeju Province has been cooperating with POSCO ICT, which secures the proven technology and know-how about engineering technologies including the large-capacity ESS; and laid the foundation of solving the problems brought up so far and implementing an independent micro-grid.
Once this project is completed, the micro-grid will be established, which is the independent power grid that doesn’t receive any external power using the large-capacity ESS and renewable energy together; and will be the world-famous commercial operation site.
By participating in this project, POSCO ICT will be able to prove its ESS product technology and associated engineering technical skills again at home and abroad.
POSCO ICT has been implementing the “Smart renewable” area project since December 2009, by building up “Jeju Smart Grid Test-bed”.
While carrying out the project, POSCO ICT developed and demonstrated 2MW class ESS; and developed the output stabilization technology to supply the renewable energy source stably, and secured and commercialized the micro-grid development technology that can be applied to the island/downtown area and industrial complex.
In particular, POSCO ICT is also promoting overseas projects, such as the establishment of the micro-grid through cooperation with Japanese company “Edison Power” and the implementation of the ESS supply project.
In Japan, POSCO ICT’s business related to renewable energy seems to gain momentum, as interest in renewable energy is growing after nuclear plant accidents.
“POSCO ICT is concentrating on developing energy businesses based on the smart grid technology from the perspective of securing a next-generation growth engine. Making the most of the strength that both IT and engineering technologies are secured, POSCO ICT will promote the business proactively, and expand the overseas business in Japan and other countries more actively,” said one POSCO ICT official.
