- Real time tracking and logistics status monitoring for cargo anywhere
- Real time location and status service via M2M (Machine To Machine) and sensor technologies
Posco ICT (Executive Vice President: Kuk-Hwan Jun) and KT (CEO: Chang-Gyu Hwang) works together for "Global Logistics Tracking Security Control" service. It provides real time information such as location and status of international cargo via mobile device and internet both locally and internationally. The information is created based on characteristics of the cargo shipped from Korea.
Both companies, in accordance with the trend of reinforcing security for international cargo, plans to launch the service from next month, starting with installing location-based security devices on the cargo containers.
Such information including theft or damage on outbound cargo from Korea was hard to secure, and this service is expected to greatly boost safety of export shipments.
The service is rated to be highly competitive from the launch as it is the first to meet the security guideline required by SAFE Port Act and Department of Homeland Security of the U.S., which are expected to go into effect from end of this year.
Posco ICT, in an effort to launch this service, has developed the platform along with S-WINNUS, a specialist in logistics solution, which has been linked with T-FMS (Total Fleet management System) and global communication network operated by KT.
The service has been applied with top-notch technologies including real-time communication based on M2M (machine-to-machine), detection of unauthorized opening or closing of container, sensor for temperature, humidity and shock, and NFC (Near Field Communication) based verification to prohibit illegal access.
In consideration of international logistics environment, the two parties have utilized low-power technologies that allow application of the service for extended period of longer than 50 days. The equipments can withstand hard environments of sub-zero temperature, on-shore wind, dust and shock.
The service has been actually tested in Russia, Europe and China for high-tech cargo like semiconductor or home appliances, and been rated as a highly competent countermeasure against issues such as theft and damage. Additional services linked with insurance companies will serve to save logistics costs overall.
On the 8th of this April, figures from related parties such as Won-Ho Jang, executive director of KT Global & Enterprise and Dong-Ik Choi, counterpart and sales director of Smart SOC at Posco ICT, Joong-Jo Shin, president of S-WINNUS were present at the signing ceremony for the cooperation contract.
What is the SAFE Port Act?
After the September 11 attacks, the U.S. government has mandated installation of security devices on all cargo containers incoming to its territory from the end of 2014. The act is expected to be a basis of full lot test by the U.S. customs authorities, which will lengthen the time for customs clearance. But containers with security devices and measures may get cleared depending on their efficiency.
