POSCO ICT (CEO, DooWhan Choi) plans to expand and supply the world's best smart BHS to domestic and overseas airports applying IoT, Big Data, AI, and robotics for the management of passenger checked baggage.

POSCO ICT successfully implemented the new BHS (Baggage Handling System) at the Passenger Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport, which is scheduled to open next year. BHS is a comprehensive logistics system that reads the passenger baggage with sensors, automatically classifies it, and transports it to a boarding aircraft. BHS installed in Passenger Terminal 2 has a total conveyor belt length of 42 km, which is capable of handling the baggage of 18 million passengers annually. The system uses high-efficiency equipment and light-weight material to reduce the total energy cost by more than 70% compared to existing system. Moreover, it applies the multi-dimensional loading system for baggage in case of a temporary hike in passenger numbers, and the handling capacity is more than doubling to effectively prepare for emergencies.

POSCO ICT had developed and is currently operating BHS in Passenger Terminal 1 of Incheon International Airport, which opened in 2001. Recently, they are developing ‘Predictive Maintenance System', which is the world’s first application of IoT, Big Data, AI, and Robotics technologies to BHS to collect the operational status data and analyze it in real time to correct possible problems before problem occurs. Moreover, POSCO ICT developed a system and the field application is being discussed, where IoT sensor is attached to each baggage tray and as the tray moves through the system, it collects status data such as the vibration of equipment, including motor, and the system detects any problem.

With the world class cutting-edge airport system, POSCO ICT is working on several airport projects currently in construction in Korea and other countries. Lately, they have been awarded BHS expansion project for the domestic and international terminals of Jeju International Airports. In addition, POSCO ICT plans to actively promote the export of BHS other countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Uzbekistan.
