POSCO ICT is establishing Mega Hub Logistics Center for Hanjin

2020.09.22

POSCO ICT has won a project to build a "Mega Hub Logistics Center" for Hanjin and signed a 107 billion won contract.

Hanjin's "Mega Hub Logistics Center" is to build an integrated logistics center with four stories above ground and a total floor area of 148,230 square meters on 59,541 square meters of land in the Daejeon General Logistics Complex by 2023. Once the mega hub center is completed, 280 cargo trucks will be able to work simultaneously, and 1.2 million processing capacity will be secured per day. To that end, the total length of conveyor belts in the logistics center alone is 37.5 kilometers. It is expected that Hanjin will be able to further strengthen its competitive edge in delivery by minimizing the transportation process by converging the parcel delivery service that had been in distributed operation into the mega hub logistics center.

POSCO ICT, which is in charge of building the automation system, will be in charge of the establishment of facilities and systems to automatically handle the entire process from warehousing of couriers arriving at the mega hub center to forwarding through classification. In particular, the company plans to establish an unmanned classification system that automatically categorizes incoming parcels according to volume and shape by applying AI-based package recognition solutions. In addition, the company plans to increase operational efficiency by applying a dynamic balancing system that automatically distributes loads by detecting the amount of goods that are driven by the Sorter, a key system that finally classifies parcels by delivery destination.

POSCO ICT has established and operated the BHS(Baggage Handling System), which automatically classifies the luggage of passengers for Incheon International Airport's passenger terminals 1 and 2.
As such, the technology accumulated while establishing and operating the world's most accurate airport BHS will also be applied to the establishment of smart logistics systems.

Analysts in the industry say that POSCO ICT has the best competitiveness in Korea in related fields, including holding infrastructure and control systems such as automated sensors and facilities that automatically classify and process logistics, and plans to further expand its presence in related markets after successfully completing GS Home Shopping's automated project to automate the Gunpo logistics center last year.

POSCO ICT said, "As the number of non-face-to-face online shopping increases in the wake of the Corona 19 virus, the logistics industry is rushing to transform existing logistics centers into smart logistics systems by integrating, enlarging them and introducing automated facilities."
